Full Moon and New Moon Day

In Hinduism, especially in Bali, some holidays is celebrated based on lunar calendar, namely full moon (purnama) and new moon (tilem). Meanwhile, the celebration of full moon and new moon is part of Naimitika Yadnya (rituals performed at particular times).

Meaning of full moon

The word purnama is derived from the word purna which means perfect. Based on the Indonesian General Dictionary, purnama means ‘a round or perfect moon.’ The worship on full moon is aimed at Lord Candra and Lord Ketu as the god of brilliance to invoke perfection and holy light of the Almighty God in various forms of Ishta Dewata. By and large, on this full moon holy day, the Hindus offer daksina and canangsari oblation in every shrine and pelangkiran (offering platform) in each house.

Hindus believe that on full moon day they have a high sense of sanctity, so that the day is mentioned with the word dewasa ayu or auspicious moment. On that account, every holiday celebration coinciding with the full moon, the implementation of ceremony is called ‘nadi’ or commemorated grandiosely.

Meaning of new moon

Meanwhile, Tilem holiday is celebrated on new moon when the sky is dark without moonlight. In terms of astronomy, in the new moon the position of the moon lies between the sun and the earth, so that the atmosphere becomes pitch black at night.

New moon ceremony has the meaning as a worship ceremony for Lord Surya. All the Hindus are hoped to adore and worship with a series of yadnya ceremonies. Hindus believe the day of new moon has the virtue of doing self-purification and functions as a neutralizer of all spiritual impurities found in humans. At the same time, it coincides with the meditation of Lord Surya becoming the right moment to ask for salvation to God.

New moon has a close and inseparable relationship with full moon. Purwa Gama palm-leaf manuscript states that when the full moon and new moon come, people should pray and worship God to ask for purification, blessings and welfare.

Through the cycle of full moon and new moon, nature actually teaches human beings about the existence of basic dualism like evil and good or dark and bright. Both of them revolve around human life periodically and will never stop before the world comes to an end.

Similarly, full moon and new moon also teach humans that when feeling happy they should not get much dissolved in the joys that can make complacent. Conversely, when humans are in a state of deterioration, they must immediately rise because the light has been waiting for them in front. Have a nice celebration of full moon day falling on Tuesday (Feb. 19). BTNewspaper/bali.panduanwisata.id; inputbali.com
